The regional toll of COVID-19: more deaths in Suriname, Jamaica and Trinidad

By Aaron Humes: A record number of individuals have died of COVID-19 in Suriname in a single day, with multiple deaths also recorded in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago as the Caribbean continues to grapple with the diseases, according to CMC News via Caribbean National Weekly.

Surinamese authorities reported nine deaths in 24 hours, the most ever in that country’s history in such a timespan and a total of 85 deaths. Suriname has 4,346 total cases with 26 new infections in the past 24 hours. 767 of these cases are recorded as active.

Jamaica reports two more deaths and 60 more cases. The deaths, recorded in Kingston were of an 80-year-old female with a history of uncontrolled hypertension and a 42-year-old male who was hypertensive, diabetic and obese. Jamaica now has 3,024 total cases, 1,965 active, and 950 recovered and 32 dead.

Trinidad and Tobago reported the death of an elderly man with existing health problems, pushing the country’s death toll to 34. Its Ministry of Health said that there were 16 positive cases from samples taken between August 25 and September 3. Trinidad and Tobago has 2,250 positive cases with 1,492 active cases.

Haiti repts 8,336 total cases, 2,191 active, with ten new cases recently confirmed.

In Guyana, where 46 deaths have been recorded since the first case in mid-March, the country recorded nine new positive cases of the virus, putting its total at 1,468, with 954 people having recorded as active.

And Belize reported 67 new positive cases pushing our total to 1,261, with 945 active cases and 15 deaths.
