Belizean men complete more suicide attempts than women, data shows

Posted: Tuesday, September 8, 2020. 11:07 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Belizean men are more likely to complete a suicide attempt than women, according to data shared today by the Belize Mental Health Association (BMHA).

BMHA President Aimee Jex explained that data gathered from the Ministry of Health shows that over the past 112 years women have had more suicide attempts than men, but that more men have died as a result of suicide than women.

“Even though women have higher attempts, maybe only 1 out of every five women will die from an attempt, whereas one man will die out of every three attempts,” Jex said.

Jex said that pertinent issues tied to those statistics include depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. She stressed that the statistics emphasize a need for targeted initiatives to reach out to men to assist them with mental health issues.

Notably, Belize is not in a unique position with respect to male/female suicide ratios. Reports coming from countries like the United States and the United Kingdom also show that completed suicides are dominated by men.
