BREAKING NEWS: Rt. Hon. Said Musa retires from electoral politics

Posted: Tuesday, September 8, 2020. 6:25 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Right Honourable Said Musa today ended a 45-year political career by informing his party leader, John Briceño that in his words, “the time has come to step aside as PUP Fort George Standard Bearer and make way for a young and competent leader to be selected as the PUP candidate,” a just-released statement from the party announced this evening.

Briceño was visiting Musa at home in Belize City, where he continues to convalesce from a stroke he suffered in May.

The party says Musa has written to his constituents in Fort George as follows: “, “In view of the imminent date for the next general elections, it has been agreed that the new standard bearer is to be endorsed by the National Executive of the Party on the recommendation of the constituency Branch Executive.”

And while speculation as to who that will be begins almost immediately, the party took time to say thank you to the former two-term Prime Minister and Senior Counsel.

Party Leader Briceño told Musa directly, “As leader of this great Party, I express gratitude for your dedicated service to the Party and nation. I promise you that I will lead the PUP to victory in the coming general elections. As Belizeans, we must all be thankful for the work that you have done.”

Briceño added this in the party’s formal statement: “I was 14 years old in 1974 when Said started working and fighting for the people of Belize. It is almost two generations that Said has selflessly served the people of this country. On behalf of myself, my family, the PUP family and the Belizean people I say – thank you Said!”
