Shyne Barrow supports education in Messop despite COVID-19

By BBN Staff: Despite the negative impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on Belize’s economy, United Democratic Party (UDP) Standard Bearer Shyne Barrow continues to support his constituents with the latest distribution of scholarships through the E.O.B. Barrow Education Fund.

Through the fund, which was established in 2019, Barrow distributed150 scholarships to students at varying levels of education.  The initiative was valued around $25,000 and shared between the Curl Thompson partial scholarship for primary schools, the Michael Finnegan partial scholarship for high schools and the Shyne Barrow partial scholarship for sixth form students.

“Due to COVID-19 the financial climate is very distressed, so there’s not a lot of money so we try to help as much people as possible rather than give large amounts to a small few, I prefer to give smaller amounts to a larger set of people,” Barrow said.

He noted that this year’s scholarship distribution was made possible through his major donors Hilda Thompson and Newton Myvett, CEO of the All for One Foundation.

The initiative was also complemented by the distribution of 1,000 school bags back in August in preparation for the eventual reopening of school. Barrow also sponsors an annual back to school haircut drive and hair braiding which had to be canceled this year due to the pandemic.
