By Aaron Humes: Mayor of Belize City, Bernard Wagner, said that in navigating Belize’s current existential crisis due to the “invisible enemy” COVID-19, we would do well to be reminded that our forebearers were determined that we would not be “a country of chattel”, subject to the Spanish.
Echoing President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, the Mayor said that in a time of war, there is no time to complain, no time to explain; you follow dictates and directives as if they are to save our lives.
But he added that the enemy can be defeated if Belizeans employ action and discipline like in 1798 and more recently the Spanish flu pandemic following the First World War.
Covid-19 can be set back if we follow those dictates and be our brother’s keeper, and perhaps 100 years from now, it will be our efforts being praised, he continued.
