By Aaron Humes: As co-chair of the National Celebrations Commission, Minister of Education Patrick Faber addressed the  gathering on the occasion of the 222nd anniversary of the Battle of St. George’s Caye.

The momentous decision, as he reminded, had not been easy in light of the previous depredations of territory.

But facing the largest invading force of its time, Faber said, our ancestors, black and white, came through, imbuing us with that spirit that still characterizes our nation today.

That spirit, said Faber, has led us through world wars, illnesses, national security concerns and others, but as we face the current crisis, we must see it as a time of opportunity, a time for national resolve and unity, to come together to defeat our other enemies –  crime and poverty, for example, as well as an eroding of patriotism.

Our decisions, like that of the Baymen, can only be proven right in hindsight, Faber said, and he saluted the Prime Minister, Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero and frontline workers in health and national security.

The Minister also recognized the late Orin Velasquez of Ladyville in calling for fighting against crime and social decay.

Coming up is the crowning of the Queen of the Bay and pre-recorded performances.
