US officials warn that aid to El Salvador is at risk

By BBN Staff: An official from the United States (US) informed the Salvadoran government that assistance to the Central American nation is at risk due to El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele’s defiance of his Supreme Court and congress, The Associated Press reports.

The Donald Trump administration has been among Bukele’s biggest supporters.

But in the US there is growing criticism among legislators over Bukele’s actions in El Salvador including the use of troops to intimidate legislators and his rejection of a high court ruling against tough pandemic restrictions.

A letter sent to the Bukele government warns that the actions by the President have raised questions about the government’s commitment to the criteria for receiving assistance from the US.

The Trump administration has stood firm with Bukele and said that he had promoted dialogue.
