Police remind dog owners of their legal requirements when out in public

Posted: Monday, September 14, 2020. 6:34 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Police Department reminded pet owners today that they have legal obligations to ensure that their animals are not running around as strays, citing two pieces of legislation to make its point.

The Public Relations Unit of the BPD issued public notice via social media, noting that under the Dogs Act, CHAPTER 153- Laws of Belize Edition 2000 17, a dog owner commits an offense by letting their dog runs astray in public

The police also quoted the Summary Jurisdiction Procedure Act Chapter 98- Laws of Belize 2000 petty offenses -4.- (1)- which reads “A person who permits any unmuzzled ferocious dog to be at large or set on or
urges any dog or other animal to attack, worry or put in fear any person or beast; commits an Offense.”

The department stressed that muzzled means protecting part of a face including the nose and mouth of an animal suck as a dog or horse. The department said that those wishing to know more about dog laws in Belize can read the  Laws of Belize chapter 153 revise Edition 2000 17.

Recently, the United Humane Societies of Belize (UHSB), have been working on drafts for amendments to Belize’s animal cruelty laws, saying that the laws are old and no longer adequately address the issues for which they were intended. The UHSB said that the major push is to increase the fines associated with committing offenses under the Dogs Act and the Cruelty to Animals Act, Chapter 115 of the Laws of Belize. The UHSB has managed to gather almost 1,300 signatures for a petition to make those legislative adjustments.
