Corozal Town listed among best small cities to retire to

By Aaron Humes: Tourists to Belize are typically drawn to flashier, colorful places like San Pedro Town and Placencia, or perhaps San Ignacio or Punta Gorda.

But the editors at International Living magazine say that on a tight budget, Corozal Town, Corozal District, is where retirees can settle for less than US$30,000 a year, and take advantage of a culture-rich lifestyle, excellent infrastructure, and top-class dining and entertainment.

“When it comes to a comfortable and affordable retirement, smaller cities can provide a good option–when they offer the vitality of a cosmopolitan lifestyle, but without the crowds or high costs of big-city life,” says Jennifer Stevens, Executive Editor, International Living.

Corozal joins locales in France, Ecuador, Portugal and Vietnam on the list.

With a modest population of just over ten thousand, the magazine says the town and surrounding locales such as Consejo, Copper Bank and so on is “continuing to gain popularity among ex-pats and native Belizeans… the most popular destination in Belize for ex-pats who like the idea of Caribbean living but need to live frugally on their retirement pensions or savings.”

Pluses include English as the official language; the mix of Latin and Maya culture (the town was built on the foundations of the former Maya ceremonial center of Santa Rita); the dark-green waters of Corozal Bay which are good for fishing, sailing and swimming; and the laid-back lifestyle with Caribbean ambiance and excellent weather. Of course, Mexico sits less than ten miles away for those who want the best medical care and shopping options.

The magazine says, “Depending on where in town you live, a couple can live well on a budget of US$1,600- US$2,200 a month.
