By BBN Staff: Belize joins the other 194 members of the World Health Organization today to observe the second annual commemoration of World Patient Safety Day.

The day, which was coined at the 72nd World Health Assembly last May, is being celebrated under the theme “Health Worker Safety: A Priority for Patient Safety.”

The Ministry of Health (MOH) issued a statement today noting that the day is focused on raising global awareness of the importance of prioritizing and addressing patient safety as a hallmark of good medicine; with this year’s focus being on the direct correlation between safe health workers and safe patients. The Ministry stressed that this year’s theme is made even more relevant in the face of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

“The current pandemic has placed unprecedented pressure on health systems worldwide including Belize. More than ever, the challenges continuously encountered by health workers, especially those on the front line, are coming to the forefront,” the Ministry said.

The MOH also noted that there is a Medical Institution Act, going through the processes of becoming official legislation, which has improving patient safety not only within the public sector but also the private sector as a major priority.

“Recognizing this day allows the Ministry of Health to promote all aspects of patient safety, including progress towards reaching national milestones. In solidarity with the call to action, health facilities have been encouraged to display orange colors,” the Ministry added.

The MOH also noted that it continues to provide the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers, sources necessary training for those workers, and encouraging patients who have experienced problems at health facilities to use the patient complaint form to document and register complaints that are forwarded to the Ministry for resolution.
