Tropical Storm Beta has winds of 60 mph and is about 290 miles east of the mouth of the Rio Grande as of this morning. Beta is currently moving north at 8 mph and is expected to strengthen as it slowly approaches Texas in the coming days.
On the forecast track, the center of Beta will slowly approach the Texas coast into early next week.
Slow strengthening is forecast, and Beta is expected to become a hurricane on Sunday.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km) from the center.
Hurricane watches are in effect for parts of eastern Texas, as well as tropical storm watches for southern Texas and parts of southern Louisiana.
An air force reserve hurricane hunter aircraft is investigating Beta.
