By BBN Staff: The Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) are sending thanks and respect to the Belize Defence Force (BDF) this weekend for stepping up and defending them from being harassed by Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF) on the Sarstoon River.
BTV leader Wil Maheia explained that, on Saturday, the group was headed to Sarstoon island for its 12th annual visit to plant a Belizean flag on the island in honor of Belize’s independence. Maheia said that this particular trip was a special one, as it was being done in honor of the late Hubert Pipersburg and Nedal McLaren, both BTV members, who both passed away this year.
Maheia said that a GAF boat saw them and approached to impede their journey when the BDF showed up.
“We have to big up officer in charge of the BDF outpost Rahim Guerra, he was a real, natural hero. He didn’t ask the Guatemalans to back down, he told them,” Maheia said.
Maheia said that after the BDF intervention the BTV continued on their way, placed their flags as they had intended, circled around the island, and returned to Punta Gorda, without incident. He also said that the BTV donated a flag to the BDF outpost that was courtesy of Jex trophies.
