By BBN Staff: Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) issued a release demonstrating that the Board is taking immediate action to “assess and investigate an allegation of the misuse of the company credit card” by Nestor Vasquez, former Chairman of the BTL Board.
Apart from appointing Alan Slusher as the new Chairman, the company is moving to contract an independent auditor to “ascertain and provide verification of the allegation”. Fiscal checks and balances are also being assessed to ensure “robust and best practice guidelines for the company”.
In light of the resignation of Nestor Vasquez, an Executive Committee of the Board, led by the new Chairman (ie. Alan Slusher) and including Retired Colonel George Lovell and Rafael Marin, has been appointed to “provide direct oversight and support to the management of the company”.
The BTL release notes that the Board of Directors “takes seriously its fiduciary responsibility to shareholders, staff, customers and the general public and is taking the necessary steps to reconcile and rectify weaknesses that resulted in this unfortunate incident”.
BTL reports that since nationalization, the company “has made significant investments in technology, infrastructure and products” to meet the expectations of a modern and integrated Belize.
The release ends boasting that Belize has “one of the most modern and reliable mobile and fibre networks in Latin America and the Caribbean” and that “BTL’s achievements and transformation are in the service to and for the good of all Belize”.
