By BBN Staff: The cybersecurity programme of the Organization of American States is preparing to host its Fourth Annual Cybersecurity Symposium, but due to the ongoing pandemic, the event is going virtual.

The symposium will last from September 28th to October 9th, gathering experts and professionals, both public and private sector, from within the tech industry to promote the strengthening of the cybersecurity capacities of participating countries and the region.

Caribbean Global reports that the session is intended for decision-makers, specialists from cyber attack response centres, cybersecurity officials, and others interested in the subject. During the symposium, participants will develop four thematic tracks related to technical aspects of cybersecurity. There will also be a panel related to the financial sector on the final day.

On the list of guest speakers for the launch session is Valecia Maclin, General Manager Engineering, Customer Security and Trust, Microsoft; Michael Timmeny, Senior VP and Chief Government Strategy Officer, Cisco Troels Oerting Jorgensen, Chair of the Advisory Board, Centre for Cybersecurity, World Economic Forum.

Cybersecurity still remains an issue for Belize, as there is currently no active legislation addressing cyber crimes, though several announcements have been made over the years that the legislation is being worked on by the Attorney General’s Ministry and various social partners including the Office of the Special Envoy for Women and Children.
