By BBN Staff: A new United Nations (UN) report warns that several human-made “megatrends” could prevent the world from reaching its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)s, reports Caribbean News Global.

An article published this week cited the recently-released UN Economist Network report “Shaping the Trends of Our Time,” as warning that the world is off track with meeting its SDGs, launched five years ago, and that the COVID-19 pandemic may have reversed any gains achieved thus far.

The report was issued on the eve of the 75th UN General Assembly, with the UN Economist Network calling for a new, holistic way of designing policies looking 75 years into the future. The report argues for greater cooperation across areas such as digitalization, urban planning and energy production, which notes that these areas have traditionally been approached in isolation.

“This is the moment for the world to come together to confront the ‘megatrends’ highlighted in this report through forward-looking policies that are fit for purpose. A better and fairer society can emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic if global coordinated action is taken to address the fragilities within and among nations to ensure prosperity for all,” said Mukhisa Kituyi, secretary-general of UNCTAD, and contributor to the report.

The report stressed that meeting the SDGs is highly unlikely if policymaking worldwide continues to operate as it does now.
