Belize perseveres in helping most needy

By Aaron Humes: A further doubling of assistance with food through the COVID-19 Food Assistance Program is on the way.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced that a further $20 million is coming from the OPEC Fund for International Development, with 39,000 households already benefited.

The Unemployment Relief Program, now in its second phase, has reached thousands and will continue through December.

Additional funds have been secured to help businesses, agriculture and Government has managed to continually pay public officers and teachers.

Education sees a move to online learning with the buying of 15,500 tablets for some primary and secondary school students.

And tourism, hit hardest by COVID-19, is getting loan assistance for its restart.

The Prime Minister thanked bilateral partners in Cuba and Taiwan for their assistance. And he pointed to the wide consultations girding decisions to end cruise ship arrivals and initiate national lockdown in the early going. And he concluded that Belize will overcome, but we will need help, especially with debt relief from the international financial institutions.
