By Aaron Humes: Storms. Wildfires. Human Misfeasance. And now, COVID-19.
Yes, it has been quite a year. And there is much more to come.
But outgoing Mayor of Belmopan Khalid Belisle said that Belize has found its center and must now chart a course forward.
That center is our national and political unity, he said, as we fight COVID-19 and its attendant maladies.
That unity will be tested in the coming weeks in the run-up to general elections, but we must remember, as he pithily summarized this year’s theme: “From adversity, opportunity; from unity, prosperity.”
Also important, he pointed out, is where we go from here – how we marshal our people and resources to make Belize the best it can be.
For that, we will need new leaders who understand that it is they who will make the tough decisions and wise choices, who are “the masters of their fate, the captains of their souls,” to paraphrase William Ernest Henley.
