By Shyne Barrow: Today Belize turns 39, she celebrates her independence in what has to be the most challenging year since the Union Jack came down and our coat of arms went up marking the beginning of an independent nation.

SUB UMBRA FLOREO means under the shade I flourish, unfortunately COVID19 has removed the shade and exposed our nation to a desert sun and drought that has destroyed our economy and upended life as we know it.

Still Belizeans have flourished, we have found a way through our inherit resilience to push forward in a new decade that has tested every fiber of our being. We have adopted to the new norm and transformed our homes into virtual classrooms, zoom conference rooms and virtual concert halls.

Our Musicians have entertained us and kept our spirits lifted with unforgettable virtual performances. Our teachers are educating our children in virtual classrooms with parents stepping up to ensure a successful transition to this new norm.

Oh but none of this has been easy, some days I’m in a daze bewildered as to how the start of a new decade could have come with a global recession that has decimated our economy caused by a virus that attacks your immune and respiratory system.

Still we flourish, our health care workers have treated those affected by the virus. Our security forces have maintained law & order while enforcing health protocols to prevent the spread of the virus and preserve life.

Our Government has improvised and persevered, finding ways to provide emergency unemployment relief, emergency food assistance while keeping all public officers employed despite the worst financial crisis ever that has us not collecting a half a billion in revenues due to the closure of all boarders and the temporary closure and restricted opening of businesses.

Still we flourish, we push for equal rights and equal protection for all, we begin the path to economic recovery, we reopen our airport to tourists which has been our Nation’s biggest source of revenue while we examine other untapped revenue streams to create an economy that is diversified and not driven by singularity.

Today we celebrate the character and fabric of a people who for 222 years have proven indomitable, a people who for 222 years have proven resilient and indestructible, a people who deserved independence 222 years ago.

Let us continue to embody the principles and ideals of democracy, freedom and equality that lead to our fight for independence from oppressive colonialism. 39 years later we have only ourselves now to hold accountable for the future of our Nation.

Let us all hold ourselves to the highest standards of integrity and morality which formed the basis of our fight for independence. So too now must we all be governed by these highest standards as we continue to build a better Belize that translates to the most vulnerable among us from Mesopotamia to Patchakan, Barranco to Sandhill and every remote village, town and city across Belize.
