By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said police and the Belize Defence Force (BDF) got to the area where the jet that came into Belize from South America early Monday within minutes of its landing.
It was the first such landing, according to Williams, in over four months, though not for lack of trying.
And the response time would have been closer if the jet had not come off the radar shortly before landing, allowing time for the conspirators to remove the likely drug cargo by two vehicles, though police believe it is still in the country.
Upon receiving information of a possible landing, police and BDF had deployed in several areas but lost valuable time by losing the jet on the radar and having to wait for their Mexican counterparts to get an accurate reading. Nonetheless, they were able to pick up two of the suspects not far from the landing site and evidence to tie them to the landing.
Williams said no other Belizeans, to his knowledge, and no law enforcement officials are involved, and if any are, they will be tracked down.
The suspects had been looked at before, but not seriously. But being found in this way has left little doubt of their involvement not only in this effort but in prior activity, Williams said.
