The Government of Belize adds 30 new patients to the dialysis program

Posted: Tuesday, September 22, 2020. 6:25 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, the Government of Belize (GOB) announced that it will be expanding its Hemodialysis Program to cover an additional 30 patients who were all on the waiting list.

Under the expanded program, patients who were on the waiting list will receive one session of Hemodialysis for free.

GOB explained that Minister of Health Pablo Marin lobbied to Cabinet for the expansion of the program, after taking into consideration the financial constraints families are faced with due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program started back in 2010 when the Ministry of Health first entered into a contract for “Hemodialysis Services for Patients with End-Stage Renal Failure in Belize” with the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority and La Loma Luz Adventist Hospital. The initial contract had a total of 30 patients, but it was later expanded to cover an additional 90 patients back in 2018 and to include hemodialysis service at the Miguel Rosado Dialysis Center and Dialysis del Caribe.
