Ministry of Health to host virtual symposium for 2020 Caribbean Wellness Week

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health (MOH) is planning to host a virtual symposium next week, in light of Belize’s 2020 observation of Caribbean Wellness Week.

The event takes place on September 28 and will be streamed live on the Facebook pages of both the Ministry of Health and Government Press Office. The event will feature presentations from health and wellness professionals gathered from the public and private sector, on a number of topics including, mental health, substance abuse, preparing healthy food, and the need for exercise. The symposium will also have a focus on remaining healthy in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Robyn Daly, technical advisor of Nutrition for the MOH explained that the symposium is geared towards promoting healthy living and raising awareness about the prevalence and risk factors of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer.

“We want people to leave the session picking up some tips that they can put directly into their lifestyle and start to implement,” Daly said.

She added that the Ministry is striving to make the presentations practical and relatable, so all participants were chosen due to their experience presenting on their particular subject matter. Presenters will include health and wellness Trainer Karen Rosito who will be doing a live demonstration on preparing nutritious; fitness instructor Ed Williams who caters largely to older adults; and yoga expert Michelle Williams who will be focusing on the positive effect yoga has on a person’s mental wellbeing, among others.

Caribbean Wellness Week is an initiative that resulted from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government’s Port of Spain Declaration back in 2009, which mandated countries in the region to promote healthy lifestyles to relieve the regional burden of NCDs. Belize has observed the event during the last week of September for the past 11 years. This year’s Caribbean Wellness Week is being celebrated under the theme “Stronger Together,” emphasizing the importance of taking a community approach to health and wellness.
