PUP names “six steps to make government more accountable”

Posted: Friday, September 25, 2020. 11:09 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Opposition People’s United Party has published a list of steps it says will make a government it leads in the future more accountable.

The Party proposes to make the House of Representatives’ Public Accounts Committee independent, banning substantive ministers from participating, and make its and other House committee business public on the airwaves.

The Integrity Commission will likewise be made independent and upgraded with a budget to be approved by the National Assembly.

The office of the Supreme Audit Institution will likewise be asked to submit a budget to the National Assembly and its reports to the Assembly as well as the Prime Minister; and that the office will be given full access to information and powers of subpoena to guarantee compliance with requests for information and data.

Next, the PUP promises campaign finance legislation, to be consulted on publicly during the first 100 days of its administration, and to fully implement the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) signed in December of 2016.

The National Assembly will be put on a once-per-month schedule as the centrepiece of government administration.

And finally, the PUP demands action on the recently released Senate Special Select Committee report. Police have indicated they are collaborating with the Director of Public Prosecutions on an investigation.
