Remembering Danny Conorquie: Six (6) years later

Posted: Friday, September 25, 2020. 3:14 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, September 25th marks the 6th death anniversary of Special Constable Danny Conorquie.

On September 25, 2014, Conorquie (20 years old at the time) lost his life while on duty at the Caracol Archeological site in the Cayo District.

At the time of the incident, tourists and tour guides were touring the Maya site.

A video circulated on social media after Conorquie’s death illustrated the chilling story of how he was executed in daylight while tourists and tour guides took cover from the gun shots they heard in the area.

Police had initially indicated that he was murdered because of a previous incident with Guatemalan poachers. However, that statement was soon retracted.

Reports were that Tourism Police Officers that were patrolling Caracol Site had confiscated 5 horses in a routine check – this meant that illegal loggers were in the vicinity because they use horses to transport the lumber from the Chiquibul Forest Reserve.

After the callous crime, the murderer(s) stole Conorquie’s weapon and ran off towards the Guatemalan border.

Up to date, there have been no arrests or charges against anyone for his death.

On September 28, 2014, Conorquie was laid to rest with full honors in Georgeville , Cayo.

What remains certain is that Conorquie is a hero to the Belizean people because he died protecting Belizean heritage.

 Rest in Peace Danny.
