By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced during this morning’s session of the House of Representatives, in honour of the month of September being National Patriots Recognition Month, that the Southern Highway will be renamed for Garifuna hero Thomas Vincent Ramos.
Ramos, who also has a road named for him in Dangriga Town, led the fight to establish Carib Disembarkation Day (now known as Garifuna Settlement Day) as a holiday for Garinagu people in Stann Creek and Toledo Districts, honouring the November 19, 1823 arrival of Garinagu from Honduras. The date has been a national holiday since 1977.
The Southern Highway runs from a point a few miles outside Dangriga Town to its junction with the Punta Gorda Town-San Antonio Road, near the site known as “Dump,” for a distance of 97 miles, although an access road to Jalacte was built as a continuation for 21 miles in 2015.
All but the Hummingbird Highway have been renamed, the Coastal Highway now carrying the name of former Prime Minister Sir Manuel Esquivel.
This week, the Government also announced honours for former PUP politicians John Smith and Leigh Richardson, and long-time public servant Eleanor Hall, whose names respectively grace the Airport Link Road, Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Belmopan and the still-under-construction new administration building on Lake Independence Boulevard in western Belize City.
