Director of Health Services: “Belizeans returning home still need to quarantine”

By BBN Staff: The Philip Goldson International Airport will be reopening in a matter of days, and the Ministry of Health stressed today that Belizeans returning home from abroad are not exempt from mandatory quarantine to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, said that tourists arriving in the country will be kept out of communities in general and will remain at certified Gold Standard Hotels, but that Belizeans will be advised upon arrival that they are required to quarantine at home for a minimum of seven to 10 days.

“And the reason is very simple: even if you bring a negative PCR test, you may have still been exposed en route to coming to Belize,” Manzanero said. “At he end of the day, we want to make sure you are avoiding exposure with your community, your family, your friends, so that will be the blanket recommendation we are making for everybody.”

He noted that he needed to stress the quarantine requirement because it is a recurring question being posed to the Ministry of Health through its hotlines.

He added that, while taking a negative PCR test to the airport will help to expedite the process, persons can still be selected at random for a PCR test at the airport as part of the protocols that are in place.
