FIFA suspends Trinidad and Tobago Football Association

Posted: Monday, September 28, 2020. 2:28 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Caribbean footballing power Trinidad and Tobago’s football association, the TTFA, is suspended after “grave violations of the FIFA Statutes,” the international footballing governing body announced on September 24.

The former leadership filed suit in the High Court of the Republic contesting the decision of the FIFA Council to appoint a normalisation committee for the TTFA, breaching article 59 of the FIFA Statutes which it says “expressly prohibits recourse to ordinary courts unless specifically provided for in the FIFA regulations.”

The former leadership is accused of various acts of serious mismanagement and FIFA now further accuses them of jeopardizing the future of football in the twin—island republic and bypassing the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which is the recognized and exclusive forum for resolving issues of this nature.

The suspension will only be lifted when the TTFA fully complies with its obligations as a member of FIFA, including recognising the legitimacy of the appointed normalisation committee and bringing its own statutes into line with the FIFA Statutes.

Trinidad was scheduled to participate in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers starting in October among other competitions.

FIFA suspended Belize’s Football Federation in 2011, during World Cup qualifying against Montserrat, for alleged governmental interference after the Ministry of Sports under John Saldivar sought to bring the Federation, led by Bertie Chimilio, under its control and subsequently refused to provide a police detachment for the home match with Montserrat, which took place in neutral territory in Honduras after the suspension was lifted.

More recently, Guatemala was suspended for nearly two years over similar issues, from 2016 to 2018.
