By BBN Staff: As Belize continues to record COVID-19 infections and deaths, the Ministry of Health says that reviews of the data have shown that hypertension and diabetes are playing a major role in patients dying from the virus.
Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero said that these conditions played a role in “almost all” of the incidents where patients died from COVID-19 in Belize.
“So it’s important that we address those situations because once we start addressing eating adequately, drinking healthy drinks, doing physical activity, you are really counteracting the diabetes, the hypertension the obesity, and obesity and obviously the Sars-Covid-2 element,” Manzanero said.
He noted that the Ministry of Health is observing Caribbean Wellness Week this week, and will be sharing pertinent information about keeping healthy through various outlets, as a means of encouraging general health and wellbeing, but also the link between a healthy lifestyle and minimizing the risks against COVID-19.
Manzanero said that tomorrow, Tuesday, September 29, is also World Heart Day, and the ministry will be taking time to disseminate information about heart disease as well as tips to ensure or enhance heart health.
