Research shows ‘ethnicity’ plays important role in United States political landscape

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Race and ethnicity plays an important role in the United States political landscape, statistics from Pew Research Center shows.

The Pew Research Center is a non profit ‘fact tank’ that informs the public on key issues, attitudes and trends shaping the world.

According to Research Associate, Bradley Jones, a closer look at voters by race and ethnicity determined that race and ethnicity are among key factors in the political landscape.

Research shows that white voters have consistently identified more with the Republican Party meanwhile black voters lean toward supporting the Democratic party. Hispanic and asian voters also leaned toward the Democratic party.

The data was extracted from 25 years of telephone data survey by the Center.

Another important factor is the gender gap, according to Jones. More women identify with the Democratic party and that gap has been increasing over the years.

Another Pew Center survey done in July and August of 2020 among Hispanic voters indicated that the economy, healthcare and the COVID-19 outbreak are top issues for the upcoming elections.

“The ways in which these demographic shifts might shape electoral outcomes are closely linked to the distinct partisan preferences of different racial and ethnic groups,” an article from Pew Research Center said.

The center’s data reflects that non-white eligible voters accounted for more than ¾ of total U.S. electorate growth since 2000.

The United States Presidential elections is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
