By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States Presidential debate is being held live at this time.

The first presidential debate commenced without the customary hand shake reportedly due to the COVID-19 regulations.

United States President, Donald Trump and contender, Former Vice President Joe Biden are engaged in their first debate leading to the elections on November 3, 2020.

According to Dr. Mitchell McKinney, Professor of the Department of Communications at the University of Missouri, various studies demonstrate that for voters, debates serve as a focal point in the Presidential campaigns.

McKinney notes that debates serve as the most credible and useful source of information.

Debates also facilitate voter learning and familiarity with the character of each candidates, McKinney noted.

In debating the Trump’s administration’s response to COVID-19 pandemic, Biden accused Trump of knowing about the COVID-19 pandemic in early February and turning a blind eye to it. Biden said that Trump was more concerned about the stock market.

Biden also condemned Trump’s refusal to wear a face mask in public.

To which, Trump responded that his administration has done a great job acquiring the masks, ventilators and noted that the country is weeks away from a vaccine. Trump added that his administration has received widespread praise for the handling of the pandemic in the US.

Trump accused the Democratic Party of embracing ‘socialist medicine.’

The heated debate led to Biden asking Trump  to ‘shut up’ and Trump rebutting Biden reminding him about him not being ‘smart’.

Other key issues being debated are the economy, industries, racial injustice and unemployment.
