Opposition questions increased spending ahead of election

Posted: Wednesday, September 30, 2020. 11:42 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Lead Opposition Senator Michel Chebat led off questioning of the General Revenue Supplementary Appropriation (2020/2021) (No.4) Bill, 2020 and Treasury Bills (Amendment) (No.2) Bill, 2020, demanding that Government “justify” its spending ahead of an election he anticipates will lead to change.

Chebat questioned, among other things, appropriations for the Caracol Road and several Ministries, as well as the decision to increase the spending limit for treasury bills.

Fellow Senator Dr. Louis Zabaneh suggested that a more substantive discussion needs to be held about economic and other issues.

But Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte contended that in the case of the Treasury Bills, the Government was not making a loan motion, merely expanding its limits.

Both bills passed their second reading.
