By BBN Staff: Travellers Liquors is one of several companies in the Caribbean region that has taken a proactive approach in adopting enhanced product labeling standards and public information.
Members of the West Indies Rum & Spirits Producers’ Association (WIRSPA), in mid-2019, committed to implementing new label standards for Caribbean Rum Products to advocate and educate about the dangers of excessive consumption.
New standards include information on the number of drinks per container, calories per drink, advice logos that warn against underage consumption, driving under the influence, and drinking during pregnancy.
The initiative now puts Caribbean Rum Producers ahead of many of their international counterparts, says WIRSPA.
Magali Gabb, General Manager of Travellers said “this is a really important change for us, because consumers need to better understand the dangers of excessive drinking. We printed
new labels with the advice logos since late last year but with the slowdown in sales from the pandemic, the roll-out has been slower than anticipated. We’re pleased to say that they are now
on most of our products.” According to Gabb “it’s a really expensive process but we see it as our duty. We hope others will follow suit!”
CEO of WIRSPA, Vaughn Renwick said “this is a ground-breaking commitment by rum brands – it takes time to design new labels and to phase out old stock – and sometimes even bottles have to be changed. It’s an expensive process.” Renwick added, “We’re pleased to see that some producers have been able to implement the changes on some brands already, especially bearing in mind the tremendous financial and logistical challenges posed by the COVID pandemic.”
