Belize’s international airport successfully re-opens; no positive COVID-19 case in 82 passengers

Posted: Thursday, October 1, 2020. 10:58 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (PGIA) successfully re-opened today, October 1st, 2020, and according to the Government of Belize (GOB) it “ushered in a positive start to the phased re-opening… of the PGIA by welcoming 82 arrivals”. This successful opening, GOB said was made possible with a coordinated effort “across the public and private sector to prioritize the safety of those arriving and those on the ground welcoming passengers to Belize”.

In a press release issued earlier tonight, the Government of Belize confirmed that there were no positive COVID-19 test result in any of the 82 passengers that arrived today. However, all of passengers who are headed into the community, including Belizeans, permanent residents and others “are expected to self-quarantine at home for 10 days”. The Ministry of Health also strongly encouraged those headed into the community “to wear masks, maintain social distancing of six feet where possible, regularly wash hands, refrain from touching the eyes, nose or mouth, and carefully disinfect and regularly wipe down all shared surfaces for their safety and the safety of those around them”.

As Belize prepares to receive more passengers in the days and weeks ahead, persons planning to enter Belize by air via the PGIA must:

1.      Register their intention to return to Belize at https://prescreentravel.covid19.bz/Home/Landing. GOB notes that “certain categories of travellers will require clearance” but that all “requirements pertaining to types of travellers are also available at the link above”.

2.      Download and complete the Belize Travel Health App and save the QR Code and TRIP number issued to show their airline at check-in and upon entry to Belize. http://reporting.covid19.bz:8080/apex/f?p=141:2

While cargo is allowed to enter via land and sea ports, these ports remain closed to travellers in this phase of reopening. GOB therefore advises persons that intend to enter or depart Belize via Benque Viejo del Carmen or Corozal to “continue to obtain clearance via [email protected] to coordinate their safe transit”.

Today’s opening of the international airport “marks an important moment in Belize’s efforts to encourage economic re-growth while safeguarding the health of all Belizeans and visitors during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic”, notes the Government of Belize.
