By BBN Staff: The Embassy of Mexico in Belize has awarded Maria Luisa Mena de Espat with the Ohtli award 2020.
“Ohtli” is a Nahuatl word meaning “way”; for this reason, the winners are figures who “forge the path” with their unique trajectory for the benefit of the community of Mexican origin.
The Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME) and the Embassy of Mexico to Belize recognize the work of those who dedicate their professional life in actions that benefit Mexicans, as well as the altruistic work of people of Mexican origin residing abroad.
The Mexican embassy recognized Mena de Espat’s distinguished track record, in line with the theme of “Empowerment of Women abroad” promoted by the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs this year, intending to strengthen gender-sensitive policies. It is the first time this award is given in Belize.
In November of 2012, on her 15th anniversary as Honorary Consul in Corozal, Mexico’s government awarded Mena with the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, in the degree of Insignia.
