By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) will throw itself into the general election campaign with full gusto starting next Thursday.
At a virtual evening event, the party will launch the “last lap” of the campaign from party headquarters, featuring the presentation of party leader-elect Patrick Faber and thirty other candidates for the election as well as a formal farewell to current leader and Prime Minister Dean Barrow.
But party chairman Michael Peyrefitte was clear to say that even now, the Prime Minister is not going anywhere just yet.
“The leader of the U.D.P. is the Right Honorable Dean Barrow, he’s the leader of the U.D.P. We have a party leader elect, but that party leader elect does not become the party leader until the current party leader resigns. And the current party leader has not resigned; and he will not resign on October eighth; and he will be the prime minister right up until another prime minister is sworn in,” Peyrefitte told reporters on Wednesday.
The current division of labour within the UDP remains the same, he added: the Prime Minister continues to run the government, while Faber and his deputies oversee party business and preparation for the election.
Faber was elected party leader earlier this year over John Saldivar and Wilfred Elrington at a convention in Belize City, after an earlier convention result electing Saldivar over Faber was nullified by the revelation of improper taking of campaign financing from convicted fraudster Lev Dermen during a trial in Utah.
