By Aaron Humes: Further to our previous story, according to our colleagues at Channel 7 News, some 3 dozen soldiers of the Belize Defence Force with riot gear have been deployed to the Western Border this evening.
Their purpose, if needed, is to prevent any members of a migrant caravan currently criss-crossing Guatemala from entering Belize through the closed border crossing. They will also support Immigration authorities in the area.
We note that there is no information of any such attempt, but authorities have ordered the move as a precautionary measure.
The caravan from Honduras entered Guatemala on Thursday and some of its members have already reached the Mexican border, while others have been detained after clashes with Guatemalan forces. The estimated 3,000 strong group have splintered into smaller groups traveling through the provinces of Izabal and Peten, hoping to eventually reach the United States.
