GOB: We’re still in charge

Posted: Monday, October 5, 2020. 3:58 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The National Assembly will be dissolved tomorrow, Tuesday, ahead of General Elections on Wednesday, November 11.

But as more of a reminder than anything else, the Government, which is to say the Cabinet and the Office of the Prime Minister, sent a press release this afternoon to say that per the Constitution, it is still in charge.

Section 84(6) of the Belize Constitution reads, “During the period between the dissolution of the National Assembly and the appointment of a Prime Minister after a general election, the government of Belize shall continue to be administered by the Prime Minister and the other Ministers and Ministers of State of the Government.”

It means Dean Barrow and other Ministers appointed in 2015 hold their posts until the electorate’s judgment is handed down on November 11.

Barrow himself is not contesting the election, and his successor will likely be either of John Briceno or Patrick Faber, or, less likely, Patrick Rogers or Nancy Marin.
