Belize and Cuba sign Cooperative Health Agreement

By BBN Staff: This week, the Government of Belize (GOB) and the Republic of Cuba signed a Cooperative Health Agreement (CHA), adding to a rich history of collaboration between the two countries.

Minister of Health, Pablo Marin, and Ambassador of Cuba for Belize, H. E. Lissette Pérez Pérez, signed the 2020-2021 CHA at a brief ceremony held in Belmopan yesterday.

Dianie Eck Foreign Service Officer with the Ministry of Health (MOH) explained that the signing is a matter of protocol, to annually renew the agreement which has been in place for over 20 years.

“The Cuban Medical Brigade has been in Belize for 25 years. Every year we tend to get them from Cuba for a specific purpose, whether psychiatry, midwife, anywhere that we need them to help support the health system,” Eck said. “This year it was slightly different because we have the COVID pandemic in Belize and we requested assistance from a Brigade that deals especially with pandemics.”

She noted that the 59-member team from the Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade has been in Belize since late March, assisting Belizean medical personnel in managing COVID-19 cases.

“The signing is a testimony of the 25-year longstanding health relationship between Belize and the Republic of Cuba,” GOB said in a statement issued earlier today. “The Government of Belize acknowledges with much gratitude the continued support and the diplomatic relationship in many other areas amid the global COVID-19 pandemic.”

GOB also reiterated its commitment to and collaboration with the Government and people of the Republic of Cuba after 30 years, stressing that the partnership and commitment between both countries will further strengthen the relationship for many years to come.
