By BBN Staff: Sky Gazers may have noticed a fiery red star very close to the moon over the weekend.
Mars will be shining red light in the night sky all October long.
Every night this month, just around midnight, the planet will shine in the sky.
This beautiful phenomenon is occurring because Mars is closest to Earth in an event that will only occur once again in the next 15 years.
According to NASA, on October 13, Mars will be directly on the opposite side of Earth from the sun.
The planets have elliptical orbits shaped like ovals.
Earth only takes 365 days to complete an orbit around the sun, Mars takes 687 days. When Earth moves closer to the sun, Mars moves away from it.
