Over 180,000 people registered to vote in Belize

Posted: Tuesday, October 6, 2020. 9:45 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The general elections in Belize is scheduled for November 11, 2020.

The National Assembly is being dissolved today and nomination day is October 21.

Major political parties have intensified their campaigns with banners, social media advertisements and more.

Even after the dissolution of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister and ministers of cabinet retain executive power.

Just over 180,000 people have registered to participate on decision day 2020.

And due to COVID-19, the process for voting may be very different to previous years.

During a video conference with 7News Belize, Chief Elections Officer, Josephine Tamai explained that upon entering the polling station, everyone will be sanitized and the social distancing of 6 feet must be adhered to.

Tamai says that voters will hold up their own ID cards and announce their names, then remove their masks briefly to identify themselves.

“Once that has been done the person will then be required to have his/her finger re-sanitized before dipping their finger into the electoral ink. Priority will be given to people who are disabled, the elderly and pregnant women. Those persons will be allowed to go to the front of the line. In communication with the ministry of health, we have been informed that the risk is very minimal, if any at all, in terms of persons coming out to vote,” Tamai stated.

To minimize large gatherings, the counting will be done at the same polling stations.

As for voters who tested positive for COVID-19, the quarantine authority will determine how they cast their vote.
