COVID-19 outbreak at Belize Central Prison continues: 2 guards, 3 inmates test positive

Posted: Wednesday, October 7, 2020. 5:58 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health (MOH) said today that two guards and three inmates at the Belize Central Prison have tested positive for COVID-19.

Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero said that the Ministry began random sampling people from the prison using a rapid test after four guards tested positive for the virus last week.

Manzanero said that one of the prisoners was symptomatic and contact tracing of his immediate contacts lead to the discovery of the other two.

He also noted that a further 90 persons are set to be swabbed as surveillance and containment efforts continue.

Chief Executive Officer of the Kolbe Foundation (the entity that manages the prison) Virgilio Murillo, told BBN last week that they knew it was only a matter of time before the virus made its way to the prison, and that it would be through the staff.

Murillo maintains that there is no cause for serious alarm, as efforts are underway to ensure that the situation is contained as quickly as possible.
