Importance of the Youth vote

By Adrian Palma: The vote of our youths in the upcoming election is crucial for the development of Belize. Election season is here and as usual political parties are on the move preparing their plans, manifestos and tactics to win this election. However, where do our youths stand in this momentous decision making? Unfortunately, as at June 2020, only 15.7% of voters were between the ages of eighteen to twenty-four. Our youths hold the position of the smallest age group of registered voters in Belize.

Many young men and women believe that voting is not necessary for them but they are ignoring the fact of how important their opinions and voices are. As Belizeans, I believe it is our civic duty to be aware of the leadership and governance of Belize. Not only aware, but also involved in the process of selecting the most suitable representatives for the betterment of the people and the country.

Furthermore, our voice does matter and it can make a difference for our country. We are the future of Belize and we must ensure that a government that serves the people is elected. Whatever decisions are made today will be the outcome of Belize tomorrow. I am sure we have all heard the phrase “Every vote counts”, your vote could be the one that makes the most capable party get into office. We may be young but we do have the power to control the way forward for Belize.

Of course, your vote will represent what type of leader you want so being informed and educated on the ambitions, skills and genuine concern of candidates is crucial. My final message to our young voters is that voting is a symbol of your aspiration for a better Belize. Exercise your vote and add your voice to the decision making in Belize.
