By BBN Staff:The People’s United Party (PUP) issued a statement today indicating that the national assembly has been dissolved yet still the UDP government has decided to issue a major contract.
The PUP says that the UDP Ministers continue in office until November 11 as caretakers only and as such, “no major decisions should be taken and no contracts should be entered into by this hold-over Government.”
The PUP says that it is aware of a decision made by the UDP Administration to award to Imer Hernandez a $50 million contract for the construction of a new Haulover Bridge.
“We have also been informed that bids for another section of the Caracol Road are to be delivered on Friday, October 9, 2020, and that the Government intends to rush through the awarding of these contracts to their cronies. Because Parliament is dissolved, there is no House Committees and therefore, no debate on the awarding of these contracts is possible at this time. As such, there is absolutely no oversight by public institutions,” the party added.
The PUP also noted their concern in the rush to appoint six Assistant Comptrollers at the Customs Department.
Interviews for these positions are scheduled with the Public Service Commission for next week Wednesday and Thursday.
The PUP said that the new PUP government will immediately review all contracts issued without oversight and without following all applicable regulations and guidelines.
“We WILL move to cancel those contracts if they are found to be invalid, and we will do so with no hesitation. The corruption MUST end,” the statement added.
The PUP calls out the UDP for being unethical in trying to award contracts at the eleventh hour when a new administration is bound to be elected.
