Business Bureau campaigns for respect of citizen privacy

By Aaron Humes: Statutory Instrument 134, now repealed, is one example of many of how individual citizens’ and businesses’ rights, especially to privacy, have been eroded, according to the Belize Business Bureau (BBB) in a statement.

The Bureau accuses a State regime of being regressive and repressive and failing to provide the security it promises under such laws, and calls for a comprehensive rollback of all such laws and practices. For instance, it cites the release of personal information to outside and international agencies.

The Bureau says laws must ensure that while lawbreakers must be held accountable as with the Sanctuary Bay affair, citizens must be protected from governmental abuses, and not be subjected to the whims and fancies of Belmopan no matter which party governs.
