Barrow bids farewell at United Democratic Party campaign launch

Posted: Friday, October 9, 2020. 12:11 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In his first public appearance since officially advising the Governor-General to dissolve the National Assembly this week, Prime Minister and outgoing leader of the United Democratic Party (U.D.P.), Dean Barrow at the party’s campaign launch on Thursday night, repeated that it was his “tremendous privilege” to hold the post for more than 20 years, and thanked all whom he worked with and the party’s supporters.

Said Barrow, “I especially thank the rank and file, the soldiers of our party – the devoted women and men throughout the length and breadth of this country who sacrifice every livelong day for our party, who do all for our party, who would give their very lives for our party. Theirs is the glory, and I declare that experiencing their hard work, being part of their solidarity, their fervent, passionate love for the U.D.P., has been the most uplifting feature of my political life.”

Barrow said he hands over to Patrick Faber in a way he could not to John Saldivar, as he was handed over to by Sir Manuel Esquivel: “The lion of Collet, the greatest Minister of Education this country has ever seen, and the new political champion of all the people of Belize. It is a matter of the greatest pride that the U.D.P. will be led by such a man – young, but wise and mature beyond his age; blooded in politics and a fighter for the UDP from his teenage years; already proven to possess limitless energy; gifted with an unconquerable will to win; and blessed by God and his early apprenticeship in the Church with a genuine empathy for all people and a special love for the masses – the marginalized, the dispossessed. He is a veritable Daniel come to judgment, and with him, the welfare of the U.D.P. and Belize is in the best of hands.”

In his own retirement, Barrow said, he will continue to support and be available to the U.D.P. as much as he can.

The speech was preceded by a tribute video akin to that aired at the party’s February National Convention, at which Barrow gave a more expansive and tributary farewell, cut short by subsequent events.

And while Barrow has ceded the party mantle to Faber and his constituency of Queen’s Square to sister Denise, he continues to act as Prime Minister until the result of the general election on November 11 is known.

Barrow also opened his speech with a short moment of silence for the recent deaths attributed to COVID-19.
