COVID-19 situation at the Coast Guard, private institution and Kolbe Foundation being assessed today

Posted: Friday, October 9, 2020. 3:46 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: As COVID-19 cases continue to surge in Belize, particularly in the Orange Walk and Belize districts, the Ministry of Health has decided to focus its attention today on “reports of possible cases at the Coast Guard and a private institution in Belize City”.

In its COVID-19 update, the Ministry did not specify whether the reports of possible infections at the Coast Guard was at its headquarters or at one of its forward operating bases. The private institution was also not specified, but the Ministry did note that more details will be provided later today.

The Ministry was also concerned about the extension of the number of cases at the Kolbe foundation and the ongoing increase in cases in both the Orange Walk and Belize districts.

The security forces of Belize have come under the spotlight as new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in both the Police Department and the Belize Defense Force (BDF). Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams reported yesterday that 60 police officers have tested positive for COVID-19, and he told News 7 Belize that another 40 officers are in quarantine due to possible exposure.

In the case of the BDF, News 7 Belize also reported that 65 officers have tested positive and 142 soldiers are either under quarantine or in self isolation.

If there is an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Coast Guard, all 3 arms of Belize’s national security system would be under some level of COVID-19 induced pressure.
