By Aaron Humes: Taking the reins officially from Dean Barrow, new leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Patrick Faber said he accepted humbly the task of serving the party in leadership and continuing the long list of accomplishments under Sir Manuel Esquivel and Barrow.
Faber paid tribute to the voters he called “the smartest” in Belize, the Collet Division, in which he has been elected for three terms, and said “I love you back” as much as they love him.
The former teacher and administrator explained that we vote in the middle of a global pandemic that has brought significant upheaval at the family, administrative and national level, not to mention economics. We must all band together and practice that which will keep us safe, including wearing of masks and social distancing, he said.
And at the electoral level, he continued, there is only one party that has the track record to get Belize out of this situation, because of policies that ensure social protection, build infrastructure, goaded the economy forward, educating the next generation as well the current one, liberalizing and recovering technology for the popular good and so much more.
“There is a time for every leader, and every leader has his time. I wish to stress to you that this is the right time for the type of leadership that I intend to bring to this party and to Belize. Today, as I am formally granted the privilege of leading this party and the opportunity to lead this nation, I wish to assure you that I, Patrick Jason Faber, will build on the foundation left to me by my predecessors. The time has come to construct that nation that we all know is possible, and I am that builder that will work with you, our UDP supporters, and with all Belizeans, hand in hand,” Faber pledged.
