By Aaron Humes: The annual observance of World Mental Health Day this year focuses on increasing investment in mental health services amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many are uncertain, worried, anxious, even depressed about the state of the world due to COVID-19 and the surrounding economic malaise, but mental health is first and foremost a personal issue.

The Ministry of Health as part of its continued outreach on Government social media broadcast “Ask the Experts” has invited mental health experts to talk about responses to COVID-19 for adults and children and emphasized the need to be prepared, but not to over worry and fret about a preventable situation.

Leader of the Opposition John Briceno asked on his Facebook page, “Let’s take this time to personally support our own mental health while also supporting others around us. As a people, we need to be there for each other more than ever, especially with the very clear and documented threat that the new Covid-19 landscape poses to our mental well-being. We will make it through this as brothers and sisters. Let’s all do our part to enhance our Belizean lives. #SupportMentalHealth #HealthyBelize #MentalHealthForAll.” He added that the PUP’s “Plan Belize” for healthcare included expanded focus and support on mental health.

The observance first took place in 1992 by the World Federation of Mental Health and is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO).
