High ‘Gen Z’ voter turnout expected for US elections as political discussions continue on TikTok

Posted: Monday, October 12, 2020. 9:38 am CST.

By BBN Staff: We’ve heard a lot of talk about Millenials and Generation Z.

For many years, US political experts have indicated that young voter turnout had been low.

But, this year, Gen Z is getting involved in politics more than ever.

Gen Z is considered the next generation after millennials. According to the Pew Research Center, Gen Z can be referred to those born in 1997 or later, whereas millenials were born between 1981 and 1996.

Political science professor, Rebecca Trujillo of Christopher Newport University said that Gen Z voters has a lot of stake in the election.

With the current global pandemic, the way to know about key issues they are looking at is social media and popular video app, TikTok.

Gen Z is learning more about the political landscape in their country through online classes, the internet and listening to other young voters on social media.

Professor Trujillo in an interview with Wavy News said that TikTok was used to affect the turnout of a Trump rally.

“They’re using it as a tool of activism and it’s led to these mass protests on the streets. They’re able to organize through social media,” she said.

In addition to TikTok activism, NBC news reported that Snapchat assisted 1 million users to register to vote.
