Recent study finds that Coronavirus can last up to 28 days on money and phone screens

By BBN Staff: Australian researchers found that the virus that causes COVID-19 can last up to 28 days on money and glass at 20 degrees Celsius, Reuters reported in an October 11, 2020 article.

Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, indicated that in a controlled environment, the virus remained infectious for longer than other studies have shown.

According to that study, published in Virology Journal, the virus remained infectious for 28 days at 20 degrees Celsius on glass found on phone screens and banknotes. However, Paul Digard, Virologist at Britain’s Edinburgh University Roslin Institute, said that the amount of virus surviving at 28 days is very low and is therefore much less likely to infect someone than the higher amounts present when the virus is freshly deposited.

Shane Riddell, the study’s lead researcher, stated that the results “really reinforces the importance of washing hands and sanitising where possible and certainly wiping down surfaces that may be in contact with the virus”. The World Health Organization (WHO) noted that the study built on previous experimental studies and was used by the WHO to prepare the current guidelines on handwashing and disinfection of surfaces.

The researches also found that between 20 and 40 degrees Celsius, the virus survived longer at the cooler temperatures. This may help to explain the persistence of the virus in cool environments like meat-packing facilities.
