Independent investigation to be launched into prison break and subsequent riot

Posted: Tuesday, October 13, 2020. 1:21 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Authorities say that there will be an independent investigation into yesterday’s prison break where some 28 inmates escaped, and this morning’s riot at the Belize Central Prison which involved around 116 inmates.

Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of National Security, Ret. Colonel George Lovell, says that the Government of Belize will commission the investigation to ascertain how the incident escalated to the point that it did and if any prison guards were complicit in the escape.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said that, based on information received from an inmate that was recaptured this morning, police are not ruling out the possibility of prison guards assisting in the inmates’ escape.

Williams additionally called on the inmates still on the run to turn themselves in.
